A Perfect Circle bring elegance to heavy music. Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step, and eMOTIVe remain classics in the modern 21st century hard rock canon. Each one has had its own profound effect on fans, and you can feel it especially when the band hits the stage. That energy was recently transmuted to three live releases and the career retrospective Three Sixty, and it resounds just as palpably. However, their legacy is still ripe to blossom further…
So, ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino spoke to a myriad of musicians including members of System of a Down, Slipknot, Korn, and more about the impact and influence of A Perfect Circle in this feature. Check it out below!
(If you're in L.A. be sure you go to one of the CINQUANTA shows either May 10 or May 11 at the Greek Theatre with Puscifer, A Perfect Circle, and Failure)
What can you say about A Perfect Circle?
Serj Tankian of System of a Down
Serj Tankian: A Perfect Circle is really good. Billy Howerdel did a great job on those albums. They are all really well-made. Anything that Maynard does is fantastic though. He's such a brilliant artist.
Jeff Kendrick of DevilDriver & Co-Founder of AllAxess.com
Jeff Kendrick: To this day, Mer de Noms remains not only my favorite A Perfect Circle record but my favorite recording of Maynard James Keenan's. I think it's his most important release. Arguably their definitive record and coincidentally their first, I entered my college freshman year and A Perfect Circle was the soundtrack to my life. The record contains many different songs that cause the listeners' mood to be very mercurial, somber, and dark as well as uplifting and powerful. It's in my top 10 albums of all-time for sure.
Joey Jordison of Slipknot & Scar The Martyr
Joey Jordison: Man, I'm a big fan of A Perfect Circle. The tones alone on Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step are unreal. I was like, "These are some of the best-sounding records". They're almost unmatched with how good they are. Those albums are incredible, and the band is just downright amazing.
Austin Carlile of Of Mice & Men
Austin Carlile: As offbeat as it may sound, my favorite A Perfect Circle record is eMOTIVe. I know it's totally different, but I like it. I remember the first time I heard it I was like, "Dang, this is sick!" Thirteenth Step is amazing too. My cousin put "Weak & Powerless" on a mix CD, and I thought it was so sick. I Googled the lyrics and got into the album from there.
Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch
Ivan Moody: Everything Maynard James Keenan does is simply mind-blowing. I love all of the A Perfect Circle records. Mer de Noms, are you kidding me? It's all perfect. Maynard is the best of the best. There are no ifs, ands, or buts. He's a poet, a songwriter, and an artist. Nobody will ever be Maynard.
Jonathan Davis aka "J Devil" of Korn & Killbot
Jonathan Davis: All of the music Maynard makes is fucking dope, man. I dig A Perfect Circle.
John Boecklin of DevilDriver
John Boecklin: A Perfect Circle is like pizza. It just doesn't suck, and when it does, you still like it.
