April 17 marks Maynard James Keenan's 50th birthday. Now, in awesome fashion, he'll be celebrating it with not one but two shows at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles May 10 and May 11 performing as part of both Puscifer and A Perfect Circle with Failure, one of his avowed favorites, also playing. The evening, aptly dubbed "CINQUANTA", is bound to be nothing short of brilliant in our humble opinion.
We decided to ring in Maynard's birthday on ARTISTdirect.com by rounding up the "Top 10 Puscifer Songs" in this exclusive feature.
Check it out below!
The Top 10 Puscifer Songs
"World Up My Ass"
The title pretty much says it all, but Keenan's delivery on this Circle Jerks cover lubricates all of the senses smoothly. Just listen, and you'll feel it. The track's country-tinged humor hints at a bigger narrative to later come from this Southern-fried, by way of Jerome, Arizona, "punk rock" troupe.
The trip-hop elegance of this V Is for Vagina stand out instantly transfixes. Over arousing and spacey production, Keenan's croon bubbles just above the surface. It's a sexy slow-burn, showing Puscifer's power.
"Drunk With Power" (Hungover & Hostile In Hannover Mix By Joey Jordison)
Ex-Slipknot and Scar the Martyr metal guru and industrial maven Joey Jordison lends a distinct darkness to this potent remix of "Drunk With Power" available on V Is For Viagra: The Remixes. It shows the Pusciver collective can play nice with others and these songs are open to artist interpretation, a key element of the band's mythos.
By the way, Puscifer can get heavy when they need to. "Telling Ghosts" is as vibrantly vicious as any of the more metallic output Keenan’s resume boast. In fact, with its airy darkness and tripped-out twang, it might be one of his heaviest cuts ever.
A true treat from the Donkey Punch the Night EP, "Breathe" summons spirits of trip-hop through a rustic breeze before converging upon an utterly heavenly refrain. You don’t have to wait to exhale on this one.
The title might as well describe Puscifer’s fans or a group of rowdy, raucous, and racy vampires. The two may just be one in the same. The music helps paint the picture if you’re having trouble imagining.
"The Mission" (M Is For Milla Mix)
This sexy soiree between Keenan and Milla Jovovich from Sound into Blood into Wine simply seduces. Their voices converge with an enticing and energetic swagger—not swag—that could work at a cocktail party, Coachella, or Rock on the Range.
"Conditions of My Parole"
The title track of Puscifer’s second full-length simply sums up everything wonderful about the band. You’ll want to drive fast to this one, especially if your P.O. is on your tail.
This offered a gateway into the wild and wonderful world of Puscifer for most listeners. Included on the original Underworld soundtrack, its sultry noir bliss is bound to send shivers up your spine and leave you tingling.
This may very well be the most subdued and subtle yet breathtaking musical moment in Keenan’s career to date. It’s one of many reasons why Conditions of My Parole is a masterpiece. Rolling in on lush sonic waves with a soft delivery, you’ll practically fall into an endless vineyard in your mind. If you don’t, you have no soul.
