"Don't know why I'm so competitive, but I am," declares New York Knicks point guard Iman Shumpert on "Dear Kendrick", his very own response to Kendrick Lamar's controversial verse on "Control".
Shumpert takes aim at hip-hop's current man of the hour and nails him right between the eyes with this smart, sharp, and slick response. Now, there's been a bevy of responses to Lamar's boasts about being "king of New York" and murdering his competition, but this is the brightest of the bunch. Shumpert not only calls out "his favorite rapper", but he takes it to the hole and scores on him as well.
Shumpert's flow remains rough and rigid, boasting a perfect balance of street grit and polished gleam. He takes the piss out of Lamar's lofty claims without ever insulting him. It could very well be the classiest battle track in rap history. He shows everyone else how it's done before they upload their own responses.
Moreover, it properly heralds his arrival behind the mic as a force to be reckoned with. The verses are artfully constructed but the assault is direct nonetheless. "Dear Kendrick" you've got some real competition...
