R&B wouldn't be where it is today, if it weren't for Jodeci. Nearly every modern star from Chris Brown and Ty Dolla Sign to Tyrese and Miguel pays homage to "The Bad Boys of R&B" in some way. They defined the genre for an entire generation and changed the course of the sound itself with the likes of "Forever My Lady." Prior to the emergence of DeVante Swing, Mr. Dalvin, K-Ci, and JoJo, the feel wasn't this smooth or delightfully bad. That's why the boys' fourth offering and first since 1995, The Past, The Present, The Future, is so undeniably important. The record hits shelves on March 31st, 2015 [Sphinx Entertainment/Epic Records], and it's got the power to enchant, entice, and engage a whole new generation of crooners.
You just feel like a badass listening to Jodeci. Even though the music's primarily about love and loving, there's a certain swagger and style that's decidedly tough and palpable. Mainly, that arises from the undeniable talent these four gents possess. "Every Moment" literally picks up where they left off. It's got that rousing energy and massive hooks. The voices and production entwine into one of the year's biggest, boldest, and best R&B anthems. Not to mention, the video itself with the boys out on a giant mountain in the snow downright redefines cool.
At the same time, "Checkin For You" shows another side altogether.
The Past, The Present, The Future sums up the group's reach and importance within its very title. This is really their moment. They have always possessed reverence and respect for The Past and the greats that paved the way for them. The Present is their keen ability to remain in the moment, and The Future shines a light on exactly where they're going—and R&B will follow.
