Feature: Why Skillet Is One of the Most Important Rock Bands of Today

Few modern bands have left the kind of impact that Skillet has.
In an age where nobody seems to go platinum anymore, their third full-length album, Alive, reached platinum status last year. In addition, they were the only active rock group to do so, and the only other "rock" acts to do so were Mumford & Sons and the Black Keys. Let's be honest too. Mumford & Sons is indie folk and Black Keys is hipster rock-i-fied blues. Skillet have got a big arena show that hearkens back to Metallica in the '80s complete with bombastic production and explosive energy. Plus, their music hits with anthemic power.
Musically, they strike a balance between electronics, orchestral, flourishes, and impactful heavy rock. They've also got a message. It's as positive as it is powerful. That's why they've resonated with countless fans and another reason why you should listen to them. We need more rock bands with this kind of perspective. The genre might go back to the forefront if we had more acts in that vein. It's not the same old darkness rock fans are used to. It's genuinely different.

When Rise drops June 25, it's bound to elevate them once again. It's easily one of our must-anticipated records and 2013, and we can't wait to hear the whole thing. They'll steal be one of the most important bands out there too—if not more so.
