Sons of Anarchy composer churns out a roots-y, bluesy rock opus with a little help from some high-profile friends.
If you followed Sons of Anarchy, then you're familiar with the music of Emmy Award-nominated songwriter and composer Bob Thiele Jr. He gave a musical identity to everybody's favorite biker gang through combining rustic moods with dynamic cues and yielding one of TV's most enigmatic scores. However, the best way to experience his incredible musical vision is to dive into Bob Thiele & The Forest Rangers' new album, LAND HO! [InGrooves]—arriving Friday July 10. The 11 songs comprising the album were cut during the show's final season, and Thiele's inimitable imprint is all over them. As a result, the record conveys its own focused, fiery, and fascinating narrative with a vibrant supporting cast cameoing throughout. The album itself moves like a movie, and that's what is so engaging about it throughout.
Amos Lee lends a shimmering soulfulness to the ponderous "Man In the Moment," adding an undeniable spark that's both elegant and entrancing. One standout "Trying To Believe Your Mine" sees Alison Mosshart of The Kills and The Dead Weather bring a bright bluesy heat Thiele's simmering musical backdrop. It could be the perfect anthem for a barroom brawl or one of those somber scenes in True Detective Season 2 with Frank Semyon [Vince Vaughn] and Ray Velcoro [Colin Farrell] deep in dark discussion—totally different show we know, but that's how malleable and adaptable Thiele's music is. Either way, it's equally spellbinding and soaring. Audra Mae injects "A Goodbye" with a somber sweetness, while Sons of Anarchy star Katey Sagal takes the spotlight (and the mic) for the powerful "On Our Way." Sagal's voice continues to stun and impress at every turn.
