K Camp has officially arrived.
K Camp taps into something very special with his anxiously awaited full-length debut album, Only Way Is Up [Interscope Records]. All eyes have been on him for a little while. He joined the prestigious 2015 XXL Freshmen Class, and he had a hit with the BET Award-nominated and gold-certified "Cut Her Off" [featuring 2 Chainz]. However, with this complete body of work, he really showcases everything that he's capable of. He's an articulate and punchy lyricist whose bars match the hooks in terms of catchiness. Moreover, K Camp stands out as something of a musical chameleon as evidenced by striking collaborations ranging from the stirring R&B-rap of opener "Change" with Jeremih to the verse-for-verse volley of "Money I Made" featuring French Montana and Genius. Both of those could be massive hits in their own right.
Moreover, on Only Way Is Up, he seamlessly embraces different coasts, elevating his sound outside the A. Snoop Dogg keeps it Cali on the energetic and enthralling "Rolling," which is meant to be blared with the windows down and the system way up. He brings out a fiery cameo from Tha Doggfather, and "Till I Die," an album stand out, sees he and T.I. go buck wild, each delivering raps with infectious and irresistible intensity. Bun B adds some Houston style to the unshakable "Bitches n That Coupe," once again illuminating how versatile K Camp can be.
Everything culminates with the one-two punch of "I'm Good" and "Control." It's a fitting climax to this 13-song roller coaster. It also helps take him to the next plateau. K Camp has officially arrived with Only Way Is Up. He's up for sure; the only place to go now is the hip-hop history books.
