Tinashe's full-length debut album Aquarius sounds, looks, and feels like a dream.
From the opening notes of the exotic and entrancing title track to the final crescendo on "The Storm (Outro)", each element rapturously entwines into an unforgettable and intimate musical tryst. Beyond the airy production and prescient beat choices, her voice captivates on par with Sade yet coupled with the kind of hit-making prowess and acumen that fuels Rihanna. At the same time though, Tinashe is unequivocally her own artist and one-of-a-kind at that. She's the future.
During the seductive "Bet", she slips in and out of a big delivery as her voices crashes like waves on the final guitar leads. Simply put, it's unlike anything out there. The same can be said for the breathy "Aquarius", which is a sign nobody will forget now. "2 On" drives right to the heart of the club, re-establishing itself as one of the year's important bangers amongst this powerhouse tracklisting. ScHoolboy Q and Tinashe make quite a duo, and after this, any collaboration between them is enthusiastically welcomed and perhaps necessary!
"Pretend" tells a relatable albeit heartbreaking story driven by her smooth vocals and a fiery cameo from A$AP Rocky.
"Feels Like Vegas" is a new Sin City anthem in its own right, while "Far Side of the Moon" blasts off into refreshing territory with its pulsating synths, strange percussion, and another massive refrain. "Bated Breath" and "Wildfire" make for a sexy and slithering one-two punch as the final strain of "The Storm (Outro)" echoes potently.
Ultimately, Tinashe makes a statement with her first offering. This is her moment. She's on her way to the top, and she deserves the crown. Mainly because she made a dream you'll never want to awaken from with Aquarius.
