Former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe recently announced his eagerness to return to making music. Having experienced the visceral thrill of live performance during an appearance at a David Bowie concert, the artist was reminded why he loved making music, and swore that he'd return. In short, he has done just that.
With the announcement of Electronic icons Fischerspooner's first album in eight years comes the news that Stipe was wholly involved in the co-writing and production in the eagerly awaited follow-up to 2009's Entertainment. Due for release on September 22nd, the album, called SIR, will be out on Ultra Records.
Also in the producer's chair is Beyonce producer Boots, so the pedigree of this keenly awaited album is high. The lead single, which you can check out below, is called “Have Fun Tonight” and is described as a pulsing club number. The video is loaded with some pretty NSFW gestures as gentleman dance around one another in celebration of a good time — so be advised that your boss may not appreciate you watching on the work's clock.
Beneath the YouTube post a description of the track explains that it's a "a queer dance ballad about polyamory (…or polyagony) encouraging your lover to go out and have fun without you," and it's exactly that. A good time for all involved.
Associated with the release of the album, Fischerspooner will be hosting a museum exhibition under the same name, SIR, at MUMOK in Vienna, Austria. The exhibit will run from June 29th through October 29th, and a companion book of art will also be released. So if you're in Europe, and into Fischerspooner, art, and books… then you need to drop a pin in Vienna, for sure.
