Flo Rida has blasted open the doors to his new My House EP, and it’s ARTISTdirect.com’s EP of the Week. One thing about Flo Rida that doesn’t get enough attention is just how tight of a lyricist he really is. He can spit with the kind of speed that cats like Tech N9ne, MGK, and Twista do. That’s the truth too. That lyrical fire always popped up in the middle of hits like “Low” and “Right Round”—usually right before some massive hook that’s completely and utterly unshakable. His signature lyrical dexterity and verse prowess between pop palatability helped make him a juggernaut. My House stands out because it really puts a spotlight on the fire during “GDFR” featuring Sage the Gemini and Lookas. We also get a taste of it on “Here It Is” featuring Chris Brown where that bar-for-bar power shines just as brightly as Breezy’s refrain.
However, what really makes My House rise up in the Flo Rida catalog is its ability to temper that quick delivery with a smooth and danceable sheen. You can really feel it during the opener “Once In a Lifetime” where he announces, “I’m just a New Jack my city tatted on my back,” while the title track takes on an almost reggae pace punctuated by just the right amount of horns and he declares, “Welcome to my house.” It’s a cool departure, to say the least.
