If you were still wondering why you're attending MoogFest, don't worry, Michael Stipe will be there to make it worth it. The Former R.E.M. frontman is set to debut his "first solo composition ever" at the festival.
Back in November, Stipe told The New York Times, he would like "to work in music again." Apparently, the feelings were brought on after his participation in a number of David Bowie tributes last Spring. It's been over five years since R.E.M. broke up, so the news came as somewhat of a shock.
The new music will score a "never-before-seen" multimedia installation, which will consist of an "exploration of desire and movement." The video footage used for the exhibition was shot by Stipe in New York, and the arrangement will made "using Moog gear."
MoogFest is set to take place from May 18th through May 21st in Durham, North Carolina. Other artists involved this year include Animal Collective, Flying Lotus, and Jessy Lanza. It may be a more technically driven festival than the other rave and rock fests happening throughout Spring and Summer, but Stipe's involvement is sure to enthrall any music enthusiast.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem as if R.E.M. will be getting back together anytime soon. In an interview last year with Rolling Stone, lead guitarist Peter Buck explained, "We got together, and Michael said, 'I think you guys will understand. I need to be away from this for a long time.' And I said, 'How about forever?' Michael looked at Mike [Mills], and Mike said, 'Sounds right to me.' That's how it was decided."
But maybe we can all hope for a Michael Stipe album sometime soon?
