43-year-old bassist Brent Liles, a former member of Social Distortion, was killed on January 18th when he was struck by a semi truck while riding his bicycle in Placentia, California. Liles was pronounced dead at the scene, and an investigation into the death is underway. Charges have not been filed against the semi driver, Javier Lopez, who was turning onto a freeway on-ramp when he struck Liles.
Liles was the bassist for Orange County punk legends Social Distortion during the band's first heyday (1981-84), playing on their breakout album Mommy's Little Monster. He and drummer Derek O'Brien quit the tumultuous band -- which eventually dissolved, temporarily, due to frontman Mike Ness's well-chronicled battle with addiction -- and played together in Agent Orange. Liles' time in Social Distortion is chronicled in Another State of Mind, an obscure documentary that followed the band around during their early days. The film was titled after the song of the same name, which was one of the first punk videos to be played on MTV. Agent Orange carved out their own reputation and were especially beloved by the skate-punk community in the early-to-mid-'80s.
Liles was preceded in death by Social Distortion guitarist Dennis Dannell, who died of a brain aneurysm in February 2000. Ness continues to tour with a newly configured Social Distortion, who remain a surefire bet to sell out night after night any time they come home to L.A. and the O.C.
