Fox has announced that it will partner with Walden Media to finance the third film in the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Disney bowed out of the project at the tail end of last year. Fox was able to step in and save the day because of the Fox-Walden marketing and distribution deal that was already in place. Budgetary and script issues are currently being hammered out by both sides, with an end of summer shoot and holiday 2010 release via Fox Walden being eyed.
The pair will split production costs for the big budget epic, which is estimated at $140 million. Voyage of the Dawn Treader is considered to be a more family-friendly story than that of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. That film, released last May, was considered a bit of a disappointment for its $215 million budget. The lack of magical effects which were prevalent in its predecessor, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a considered a factor that contributed to Caspian's lighter box office take. Disney was rumored to bow out due to this reason.
