Actress Carmen Maura will replace recent Academy Award Winner
Javier Bardem in Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming family drama, Tetro. The role of literary critic, teacher and mentor to Vincent Gallo's character was originally written as a male character, but during rehearsals in Buenos Aires, the famed director re-envisioned the character and rewrote it as a female.
Despite the fact that Bardem was never even on set for any of the rehearsals, the director made the decision, saying, "As I read and re-read the script, I felt the interaction between the two characters would be far more intriguing if they were of the opposite sex." Such actions are not uncommon on Coppola sets, and insiders are speculating that Bardem was unavailable to portray the part. Whatever the case, the character got a bit of a sex change operation! It's Coppola's, film and he can change his characters genders if he wants to.
