Big Gigantic had a pretty good 2016. The duo of Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken dropped Brighter Future, one of the funnest electronic albums of the year — and they continued to build their reputation as a band that does all it can for charitable endeavors, giving more of their time to fundraising concerts and donating more funds than your typical musician; working further on their Big Gigantic Difference Foundation. Now they're back in 2017, starting off the new year as they closed the last; with style, strut and generosity. Recently they took to their soundcloud page to issue a free download; "Winter Chill Mix Volume 3" — continuing their series of annual mixes, a chilled start to grooving in the winter, started with the first volume back in 2015.
Celebrating the winter leg of their Brighter Future tour the duo continue their mellowed-out approach to bringing a mix. 'Chilled out' barely describes the low temperature tracks being shared here. Low tempo hip hop and breezy pop dance tunes cross-pollinate in a mix that feels like it was designed with the apres-ski set in mind… and yet there is an urban layer that feels just as sweet when played in a less than romantic, snowy setting.
This installment includes songs from Kaytranada, Mura Masa, Mr Carmack, Kasbo, Louis Futon, Whetham and a bunch of backroom favorites. Kicking off the mix is Big Gigantic, themselves. The track is "All of Me" — and it's one of those well-balanced tracks — that sounds grand when pumped loud through a solid speaker set, or sweet when brought in via the intimacy of headphones. Featuring Logic and Rozes — the tune will be familiar to those who have been spinning it since it appeared on Brighter Future, where it also set the tone of proceedings.
As is usual with Big Gigantic — the thread that binds this mix together is the soul which informs the generosity of spirit. The tracks themselves are soulful, and as we progress through the sequence things get more airy, more uplifting and serve as a reminder of the good things. Positivity shimmers across the tracks, and arriving as a free download it's almost as Big Gigantic wanted to instigate a year of positive vibes and sharing. This mix goes a long way in soundtracking at least some time in the passage of winter — proving it's not all dark — and it can be pretty damn uplifting.
