KEXP in Seattle is one of the leading local stations that reach beyond their geographic radius; a definition decided upon by the local meteorological reports, rather than the influence of their music playlists. The cultural footprint of the city reaches way beyond the Pacific Northwest, and the contributions of Seattle to the global musical landscape continue to shine. It makes sense then, that the 'local' radio station is responsible for championing artists from the PNW while also playing host to a number of out-of-towners who stop by the studio when playing at one of the city's venues. A result of this prolific environment is the not-so-hidden-gem of the KEXP website - the Free Music Downloads that are available in the "Song of the Day" catalog. This is a place where album tracks and live in-studio performances from all genres of musician are stored, and shared with the world, and it's a truly wonderful corner of the internet that is somehow flavored by the scene from which it comes while also being universally significant.
Hours can be spent clicking through the seemingly bottomless catalog of podcasts and free downloads, where the likes of STRFKR sit beside Cherry Glazerr. Both bands are enjoying recent releases and scheduled tour dates - one band is from the PNW, the other is from LA - and yet, for all their diversity there is a commonality shared in the performances.
STRFKR are repped well - their track available for free download, "Open Your Eyes" is taken from their most recent album Being No One, Going Nowhere. t's a fair showing of everything else from the album - it's danceable, it's somewhat psychedelic and the signature synths shine well in this audio production, showing why those techs at KEXP are so well trusted. You can watch the full in studio performance via the KEXP YouTube channel, but downloading the track and taking it with you lends to the creation of a sweet playlist of future-rarities. And, seriously, who doesn't love those STRFKR rarities?
The free download of Ty Segall, "Orange Color Queen" offers an acoustic rendition of the artist's tender side. One of the most prolific artists currently generating sounds of all shapes and sizes is shown here at a measured temperature - it's very cool, and the track captures the essence of the man, as well as the platform on which he's standing. His awareness of the material and the sense to capture the space between artist and microphone brings a strange human scale to the song; it's deeply endearing and a clear description of why he's treasured by so many.
LA's Cherry Glazerr offers "Told You I'd Be With The Guys" - - and in doing so the nineteen year old confidently fills space with a rock sensibility that's matured beyond years. It's an exciting track - heavy with the kind of energy that was captured in the KEXP studio back in 2014. The energy has been built on, and will be shared via an upcoming record on Secretly Canadian, and via live shows around the U.S. which will commence in February of 2017. This download acts as a kind of access point for the uninitiated. Imagine the scene:
You: "You want to come see a Cherry Glazerr show with me tonight?"
Your Friend: "I dunno, what's it sound like?"
You: "Play This"
Your Friend: "Hell YES! I've always loved Cherry Glazerr"
