Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors Videos
Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors are preparing to release their new album, Souvenir, and in the spirit of generosity and to celebrate new material, they're giving away their previous album, Medicine, as a free download for one week.
Drew Holcomb has long had a reputation as a songwriter that draws listeners into his stories by sharing personal details of a universal nature, and it's an approach that was clearly utilized to full effect on his 2015 album. Medicine remains one of the most inclusive albums we've heard from the songwriter and his band.
Medicine represented a significant step for the songwriter. He had turned thirty, he had become a father, and his band was reaching a wider, more commercial appeal than before. The songs carry with them a stronger sense of the emotional, and with a kind of gratitude for the relationship they share with a growing fanbase. It's a refreshing, uncynical album that continues to leave an affecting impression.
Fans will recall the gravity of songs like "Heartbreak", "Tightrope", and "American Beauty", and will testify that these songs, now familiar, continue to hit with all the impact of that initial hearing two years ago. It was with these songs that Drew Holcomb refined his wistful delivery and more forceful passages to produce a dynamic unique to the band. It's an album of maturity and insight that draws on country influences without being constrained by the usual expectations of the genre.
There are moments on this album, like "Shine Like Lightning" and "Sisters Brothers" that sound like Holcomb had aspirations to deliver a more anthemic approach to his usual intimacy. His intentions are delivered well, and so singalong moments are guaranteed — these are the tracks that travelled well on the stages that Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors visited on a sell-out tour in promotion of the album.
While waiting for the release of new album, Souvenir, it seems sensible to revisit Holcomb's previous release and to sit with the suggestions, and realizations of truly great songs that promised much from his next release, which is almost here.
Check out our Drew Holcomb interview in which he discusses new album, Souvenir.
