For fans of dance music the name 'Flosstradamus' resonates with a certain style and ability to get the job done. The Chicago duo of Josh Young and Curt Cameruci were among the first DJ/Producers to bring Trap music to the dance floor — the effect that the duo has had on the world of EDM and beyond cannot be overstated. Just last year, in a move that shocked but also excited fans of the duo, Young announced his departure from Flosstradamus to forge a solo career.
Young, now working under the name YehMe2, has been producing a series of mixtapes that explore his eclectic vision, and an insane ability to bring genres together in one cohesive whole. Solo living has been suiting him well, and his work has been as visceral and as vital as ever. This week's free music download is from that sequence of mixtapes — and it's called "Steal This Mixtape 2".
Made throughout the month of May 2017, when Young challenged himself to make one beat a day, this mix is a better-than-decent view into the mind of the artist, and the type of stuff that's spinning in any room in which he's playing this summer.
Abbreviated to STMT2, the mix is a sweet collection of original songs, with some remixes of old and new classics thrown in for good measure. Evidenced here are the artists that Young considers influential and heroic — Aretha Franklin, Selena, Clipse, Kendrick Lamar, Giorgio Moroder, Gucci Mane, and Drake are all thrown in. Another Chicago native and peer of Young — Chance the Rapper — is a welcome presence, featuring in a mix that is set on 'madness' from the outset.
Speaking about the release Young said, "The second release in the Steal This Mixtape series is here! STMT2 picks up where the last mixtape left off only this time the production quality has stepped way up. I definitely put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this project. I hope you have at least half as much fun listening to it as i had making it!"
It's a near impossible task to describe Young's awareness of mixtape sequencing. His ability to gradually blend chemicals to create a compound that sustains tempo and mood whilst exploring a range of tones and textures is grand. The fizz and buzz of this new mixtape reflects his intention — it's challenging, and it's production is more polished. For those who can't make it out to a club and catch the man in action this mix is a perfect postcard from the summer of 2017.
