From legends to underground superstars to those who already sit atop of the charts, it was a big week in music videos. It didn't matter if artists' albums had already dropped they weren't holding it back when it came to adding a visual element.
Neil Young animated America as he painted his way across the country in the new video for "Peace Trail". The xx celebrated love in a variety of forms in "Say Something Loving", and showed off a bit of their hometown.
Next week, the new live action Beauty and the Beast hits theaters, but we got a little taste of its beauty this week from Ariana Grande & John Legend as they shared the video for the movie's title track.
Here are our favorites.
Neil Young — "Peace Trail"
A string of animated vignettes provide the visuals for "Peace Trail", which at its center is both beautiful and haunting. There's a clear message here, America is beautiful, but it's going to take a lot of work to keep the planet from falling apart. It's a lovely sentiment from Neil Young a, lifelong environmentalist who has never been one to shy away from a point he is trying to make.
Ariana Grande & John Legend — "Beauty and the Beast"
Ariana Grande & John Legend might not be winning an Oscar for their version of "Beauty and the Beast", but that doesn't stop the stunning visuals from shining through. Ariana Grande turns into a rose and the costumes and animation are just gorgeous. It may be "a tale as old as time", but we love the fresh take.
The xx — "Say Something Loving"
In a press release, The xx revealed, "We wanted to celebrate our hometown and revisit some of the places that remind us of our friendship when we were growing up," in their new video for "Say Something Loving". In it, the band celebrates love and friend no matter who it is between.
Paul Shaffer — "Happy Street" [ft. Bill Murray]
In the animated video for "Happy Street", Paul Shaffer and Bill Murray take a joyous songful stroll together. It's not long before other denizens join up and soon enough it's a parade. It's a lovely little ditty that should remind us all to go outside and lighten up just a little bit.
Future — "Use Me"
Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn, aka Future, has been on a roll recently; back to back number one albums, a string of hits seeing him pair up with some of the hottest artists in the game, and a couple of amazing new music videos. In his newest, "Use Me", Future reflects on his past, and how much things have changed. It's an inspiring video, and shows just how far one can come with the right work ethic and vision. Two intangibles Future certainly doesn't lack.
