G-Eazy is so smooth he's going to slide right to the top of hip-hop very soon.
The Oakland MC balances a classy Rat Pack-style swagger with airy, 22nd century production and rhymes that are worthy of their own tweets and Facebook status updates.
Case in point, on "Plastic Dreams", he slips from "freshman class" to ballsy boasts like, "I just keep dreaming of the day I bang Rihanna. They say, 'I'm a dreamer'. I say, 'Wait until mañana'." It's easy to root for G-Eazy and not just for him to tag RiRi either.
Following the narrative of his latest album, Must Be Nice [iTunes link], you get close to him, and you want to watch him win. "Plastic Dreams" exudes an airy down-tempo elegance with a swooning chorus from Johanna Fay, while "Marilyn" builds from a dreamy acoustic intro punctuated by Dominique Le Jeune's soothing vocals. G-Eazy shouts out the Kennedys and his flow rolls with the kind of wisdom and technical ability that belies his age—23.
Another standout "Breathe" kicks off with a tempered piano melody before blossoming into a distinct declaration of his independence. There hasn't ever been a rapper quite like G-Eazy, and that's precisely why he's destined to take over. Meet your new favorite rapper and one of the best in the game. Let's hope he and Rihanna meet soon…he deserves it.
