Game "Get the R.E.D. Out"
Tue, 10 May 2011 09:08:15
Game will premiere the video for "Red Nation," featuring Lil Wayne this Friday May 13, and it's the first single from the rapper's long-delayed The R.E.D. Album. It's about damn time, as Game fans have been waiting patiently for new music from the rapper. He hasn't released an album since Summer 2008 and fans are hungering for new jams.
But Game has been a busy man, filling the role of father to his three kids, including a newborn, and dabbling in acting. But he is hunkering down and focusing on the album and satiating fans.
ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief and Dolor author Rick Florino extols Game's newest music saying, "Game continues the tradition of West Coast hip hop with a fury, fervor, and fire unmatched by any of his peers. 'Red Nation' is one of most infectious and incisive anthems yet, and The R.E.D. Album is bound to be one of the year's most memorable hip hop albums. Game waves the flag for real rap and keeps it alive like only he can…"
ARTISTdirect.com News Editor Amy Sciarretto grabbed some time with the Los Angeles rapper, who was in good spirits and ready to get the R.E.D. out.
How are you this morning?
I am perfect!
Perfect? Wow, so you are doing way better than good.
It definitely is, according to my fourth grade teacher. I am perfect because I woke up this morning and my kids are safe!
That's a good reason to be perfect. So, you'll premiere the "Red Nation" video on Friday -- can you tell us a little about the treatment or concept?
The whole thing that is crazy, from the beginning. I don't have too much input on the video or concept. Once I pick a director after looking at their work, I step back into my square, which is being the artist. I let them do their thing. I never read the treatment once. I just knew it was going to be me and Wayne.
Speaking of Weezy, how was it working with him on the video?
That's my boy. I knew what we would do would be iconic. I had no idea when I got there it was going to be that big. It's my favorite video. I can tell when something is going to be classic during the creative process. There is lots of pandemonium. There are people running through streets with chains, poles, metal. I am trying to rap while going through these people and trying to be conscious of not being hit while I deliver these lines!
You were multi-tasking!
Right? Another part of the day, I was in the middle of the street, playing live with cars coming. I had to stand on the line in the middle and I did it with pyro and flares in my hand. People were telling me to keep it away from my head or I would have a Michael Jackson Pepsi moment. But overall, it was a great crew from the grips on up!
How did you manage to stay safe amid all that chaos?
It was crazy. I was on top of a car, jumping around and there was a bunch of stuff going on. It's like that movie Mad Max. It reminds me of that movie. It was crazy. Wayne came, did the hook and was going wild, with braids everywhere. It has lots of energy.
Okay, so I have to ask. What's the status of The R.E.D. Album? When the hell is that coming out?
The record will be out probably end of summer. We are down to two dates and I don't want to let my fans down if it's not this one or that one so I am not going to say which. I am pretty sure we'll lock that down with the higher power Jimmy Iovine to solidify my dates. I'm 99 percent ready to go. I've got everything I need from Dr. Dre out the way.
How long have we been waiting?
We're at the two-year mark, but it's not like I haven't been doing anything. I've been doing a lot of touring and I am a father of three, so it's been a lot of soccer, baseball practice and my newborn is eight months old, so I spent the entire eight months with her and took four to five months off so I could be home with her and her mom every day. I am nurturing my baby; that's what I do.
Like all good things in life, the album will be worth the wait.
Musically, it'll be the best album to come out this year, other than Detox by Dr. Dre, which will be great, but I gotta champion my own stuff right now. R.E.D. is equally on fire. This album is my best work. Get the best headphones you can when you listen to it.
You mentioned locking down the release date with Jimmy Iovine, who the world is getting to know via his mentorship role on American Idol this season. What's your relationship with him like?
Me and Jimmy are like fraternal twins. I am just a lot bigger than him. I always had a great relationship with my label, even through the fire. Recently, we got back on the level that we were on with my first two albums. After that, the label shifted, people got fired, people hired and there was the interchanging the guards.
What else is going on in your world?
I am starting to get back to reading scripts and doing acting thing.
