2015 marks the 15th anniversary of Godsmack’s classic sophomore record, Awake. It remains one of the best hard rock albums of the 21st century, solidifying the multi-platinum Grammy Award-nominated Boston quartet’s sound and their place at the top of the genre. Since then, they’ve consistently created earth-shaking hard rock with three number one albums in a row on the Billboard Top 200 and countless sold out arena shows. However, it’s Awake that remains something of a clarion call from the group. After their blistering self-titled breakout, the stakes were high, and they delivered with an even more robust offering which would eventually go double platinum and debut at #5. These were all signs of their prominence. Most importantly though, these songs hit has hard as ever. Here are the 5 Best from Awake

The 5 Best Songs from Awake

    5. “Mistakes:” Clocking in at just under six minutes, “Mistakes” twists and turns through a herculean haze of distortion and psychedelic sonic tumult. Robbie Merrill’s bass snaps necks as Tony Rombola’s guitar roars. Sully Erna soulfully carries the hook before a powerful bridge of, “God help me.” It remains one of the group’s most epic salvos ever.

    4. “Spiral:” In some ways, this feels like a spiritual successor to “Voodoo” with its eerie intro and booming verse. It boasts some Erna’s most cinematic and poetic lyrics as well as an entrancing refrain that quickly crashes into a muscular refrain. “Spiral” spins off to the heavens, beyond, and back again.

    3. “Greed:” A gargantuan guitar thrust resounds in between sharp and searing vocals from Erna. It’s one of the group’s biggest bruisers and a live standout. You can practically feel the flames burning around it on stage.
