The Gorillaz have been working on their new album for the past few months, and yesterday, Chicago rapper Vic Mensa joined Damon Albarn in the studio, as seen by a photo posted on Instagram. Mensa joins a long line of already known contributors, including French composer Jean Michel-Jarre, producer Twilite Tone, and singer-songwriter Liam Bailey, who also had videos of them in the studio posted on Instagram by Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of Gorillaz.
According to Consequence of Sound, "Producer and frequent Gorillaz collaborator Remi Kabaka (aka the voice of fictional band member Russel Hobbs) shared a photo of Mensa in the studio on Instagram today. According to Reddit user JordanPowers95, he initially tagged Mensa in the pic and later removed it, fueling speculation that the group is trying to keep the collaboration under wraps for now."
Albarn promised that a new Gorillaz album would be released later this year, but no date has been announced as of yet. No title for the album has been revealed at this time either. The virtual band last released The Fall in 2011. The upcoming album will be the Gorillaz fifth.
Last year, Albarn released The Magic Whip with his other band Blur. Currently, neither Gorillaz or Blur have any upcoming tour dates. Back in February, Albarn played at the three-day Festival Acoustik Bamako in Mali.
