The forthcoming Gorillaz album has been receiving the kind of press runup that one would expect from a record with Kanye's name on it. But finally, after the months of social media posts and unending 'news' from the music press — (Sorry, we're just excited!) — Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have finally released four new tracks from our cartoon friends, "Saturnz Barz" featuring Popcaan, "Andromeda" featuring D.R.A.M, "We've Got the Power" featuring Noel Gallagher and Savages' Jehnny Beth, and "Ascension" featuring Vince Staples.
It's been seven years since we've heard anything new from the Gorillaz, and now suddenly we have four new tracks! And all of them are — insert emotive sound for gushing in awe. And that was only the tip of the iceberg.
Just over 24 hours later, the band made their first live appearance in five years and played the entire new album, which is entitled Humanz. The record is due out April 28th and features collaborations with Mavis Staples, Carly Simon, Grace Jones, De La Soul, Savages' Jehnny Beth, Pusha T, Danny Brown, Vince Staples, Kelela, D.R.A.M, and, we know we said it above, but, Noel Gallagher. That's right, none other than the potato himself. He performs backing vocals on "We've Got the Power".
It's worth mentioning as — for those unaware — during the heyday of Britpop, you were either Team Blur or Team Oasis. It was a feud so fierce that it turned the bands' frontmen, Damon Albarn and Noel and Liam Gallagher, into bitter rivals. Now, though, it seems like at least Damon and Noel have buried the hatchet.
On "Ascension", Staples raps, "The sky is falling, baby/Drop that a** 'fore it crash". Could the coming together of two of the 90s biggest British bands spell the end of these recent divisive days? Guess we'll just have to wait to find out.
