Grammys Reduced From 109 Categories to 78 - Many categories have been merged

Reuters reports that that Recording Academy will cut the number of Grammy Awards -- the biggest awards in the music industry -- to 78 categories, which is down from 109. Looks like the Grammys will be a lean, mean, slimmed down music machine!

The leaner Grammys will take shape for the 2012 ceremony after a review by the Recording Academy of the burgeoning number of categories ranging from pop and hip-hop to audio recordings.

Many of the categories will be merged. For example, the separate awards for male and female vocal performance will now be combined into a new pop solo performance category.

The metal and hard rock categories have also been merged, as well.

In the pop, rock and country fields, the prizes for instrumental performance have been dropped.

The contemporary R&B album award has also been dropped, and contenders will be moved into the existing award for R&B album.

What do you think of the incredible shrinking Grammys?
