Green Day Nominated for Three Tonys

If there ever was a reason that served to negate Green Day's punk rock status, it's this news. The band was nominated for three Tony Awards for the musical version of American Idiot. Sure, the band kissed the last vestiges of punk rock and the indie world goodbye many, many, many records sold ago, but I've always held a special place in my heart for these guys. But these Tony nominations yank any former non-mainstream cred Green Day had away. But that's not to say we won't congratulate the guys for this accolade because it is impressive, indie snobbery aside.
The musical American Idiot was nominated for the following categories: Best Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design of a Musical. Fela!, which was produced by a multitude of musicians including Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Will Smith, received a leading 11 Tony nominations, including Best Musical as well.
