Alice in Chains have announced a North American tour, which starts with a show at Portland, Oregon's Schnitzer Hall, July 6th. The band have shared the first 14 dates, 13 of which take place in July. Then, on September 17th they'll play Chester, Pennsylvania's Rock Allegiance.

The tour announcement follows April's run of opening performances for the freshly reunited Guns N' Roses. Alice in Chains were part of the 90's grunge wave that came out of the Northwest. The Seattle-based band had a string of popular albums in the 90's including 1992's Dirt, a critical and commercial success.

Allmusic's Steve Huey compares the band's 1990 single, "Man in the Box," favorably to another calling card of the era, Nirvana's eternal "Smells Like Teen Spirit": remarking, the song's "An often overlooked but important building block in grunge's ascent to dominance, Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box" hit the MTV airwaves in heavy rotation in 1990, approximately one full year before Nirvana's ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit'... More metallic than many of their Seattle colleagues, and thus a better fit for MTV's programming at the time, Alice in Chains nonetheless resembled little else in hard rock's mainstream at the time."

The band went on hiatus following the death of their original singer Layne Staley in 2002. Alice in Chains reformed four years later with William DuVall as their new singer. 2009's Black Gives Way To Blue was included on ArtistDirect's list, the Top 15 Alternative Albums of This Decade (2000-2009), wherein Rick Florino calls it, "one of the greatest alternative rock records ever from one of the genre's best."

In 2013, the band released their sixth and latest studio LP, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here. There's no word at this time if Alice in Chains have new music in the works.
