Director Guillermo del Toro has agreed to produce a remake of the 1973 made-for-TV horror film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Del Toro will produce the film for Miramax and it will be the company's first foray into genre filmmaking under its president, Daniel Battsek.
Del Toro, who directed Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and is on board to helm The Hobbit and The Hobbit 2, prequels to the Lord of the Rings franchise, will not direct the remake. Instead, comic book author and artist Troy Nixey will make his directorial debut with this feature.
The film's plot centers on a young girl who is sent to live with her father and his new paramour, only to find creatures living under the stairs. Given del Toro's dark aesthetic, expect the creatures to have a stunning, frightening look. The film is currently in early development stages.
