Country music artists are coming together for a cause. Hank Williams Jr., Keith Urban, Tim McGraw and Lady Antebellum are taking part in a concert to raise funds for victims of the tornadoes that struck Alabama and nearby states. At the heart of the benefit show is the fact that the media was more interested in the royal wedding and the killing of Osama bin Laden that the tornado victims (and coverage of their plight) took a back seat.

Country Music Television, which will air the live special next week, and organizers said they felt the local devastation was overshadowed by media coverage of the British royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and news that the US military killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. While we can understand being miffed about the royal wedding coverage casting a shadow over these natural disasters and the plight of those dealing with them directly, we can't say we agree that the Osama bin Laden news was not deserving of the coverage. However, it would have been appropriate and necessary for the media to cover both events equally and we agree with CMT and the organizers on that front!

"The other seismic news events of the past few days have had the unintended effect of limiting media coverage of this massive, historic American disaster," CMT President Brian Philips said in a statement.

"Simply put, CMT and our artists will not allow this to happen. We will raise money, and we will shine the brightest possible light on the urgent needs of our courageous neighbors."

Kudos to CMT and the organizers for coming together to shine a light on the victims who need our help.

CMT will air the benefit concert live from Nashville, Tennessee, on May 12th. All money raised will benefit American Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

About 350 people were killed last week by tornadoes and flooding in the southern United States. More than 230 people died in Alabama alone.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who are dealing with the tornadoes and their aftermath.

Will you be watching the benefit concert on May 12th? What have you done to come to the aid of those affected by the tornadoes?
