During his Yeezy Season 5 fashion show this week, Kanye West played a new version of The-Dream's "Bed". After airing on the show, the track was subsequently posted on the artist's Soundcloud page. The track, which features a series of come-ons from The-Dream looped into a beat-less 17-minute carnal swirl, is a pretty sweet treat for fans of all things Kanye.
The-Dream originally co-wrote "Bed" over a decade ago, and it first appeared as a single on J. Holiday's Back of My Lac' album and climbed to Number Five on Billboard's Hot 100.
The new version on West's SoundCloud is a lighter, pared-down version in comparison to the original, focused on singing from The-Dream, a spaced out, reverb-heavy bass, and simple strings. There's almost a gospel feel to this version. "Love is war, I'm your soldier," The-Dream's vocals pour light onto things, whilst West's vocals are much less clear.
This is not the first time Kanye West has used his Yeezy line fashion shows to debut new music. In fall of 2015, those in attendance of the runway show were entitled to a version of "Fade," which later appeared on West's most recent album, The Life of Pablo. In 2016, West premiered a full version of that album during a Yeezy show at Madison Square Garden, along with a live stream and a showcase that displayed a treatment for a video game that depicted his mother's ascent into heaven.
The simplicity of this remix of a classic track, and the smoldering approach to a more ambient feel, could well signal a new path of lighter touches from West. But then again, who knows? The artist is not known for doing things by the book.
