"War in Me," the first taste of HELLYEAH's forthcoming Band of Brothers [out July 17], sounds like an atom bomb being dropped on modern hard rock.

Make no mistake about it, the track's mushroom cloud envelopes all the competition and solidifies the band's place at the top of the 21st century pack. A bludgeoning polyrhythmic riff hits with battering ram precision from guitarists Greg Tribbett and Tom Maxwell as singer Chad Gray screams, "My war", with vibrant viciousness. The track snaps into a battering ram verse propelled by Vinnie Paul's inimitable drum air raid in tandem with Bob Xilla's bass rumble. Paul hasn't sounded this fierce since The Great Southern Trendkill, and it beats all expectations into submission.

The madness subsides as Gray proclaims, "I'm over you. I'm over every fucking thing" just before one more schizophrenic refrain and a fret-melting solo that bends from airy wah sounds into all-out shredding. HELLYEAH's fury can't be contained, and the band has evolved into an infectious, incisive, and indisputable outfit. Every groove and riff are tight and Gray sounds brutally brilliant.

The war has begun, and HELLYEAH is already winning it.
