Holly Johnson, singer of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, has been living with HIV for 23 years.

Johnson was diagnosed as HIV positive back in 1991. At the time, he thought it was a death sentence, but he has defied the odds and lived with the ups and downs of his condition for over two decades.

In a chat with The Observer, he opened up about what he has dealt with through the years and said, "A considerable amount of effort goes into it. I live like a nun. I don't drink. I don't smoke. I haven't done for years. I take copious amounts of vitamins and medications. I do everything possible to support my health. But I'm in the same boat with millions of people who have other illnesses."

He furthered, "Unfortunately, the drugs have side effects. I've developed Type 2 diabetes now because of that, and I have to take more medication for that."

Still, he is happy to be alive, saying, "But I'm not whining about it, and I never will. Because I'm so lucky in many respects. Many beautiful friends who were my gay extended family have gone. Freddie Mercury wasn't the only friend who died in 1991. Or 1990. Or 1985 even. It got closer and closer to me as the years went by. So I was fully expecting that I was next."

So he was not expecting to live as long as he has, but is grateful for all this time, despite the meds and the illness itself.

Are you a Frankie Goes to Hollywood fan? Their big hit was "Relax." You know the mantra. "Relax. Don't Do It." Remember?
