"You can see God when I take my mask off," barks Johnny 3 Tears at the beginning of "We Are", Hollywood Undead's first official single from their third album Notes from the Underground, out this January.
With production from longtime studio cohort Danny Lohner, Los Angeles's collective of masked musical scoundrels channels something even darker than the gutter tones of their celebrated debut Swan Songs. "We Are" elevates the game to a whole new playing field for Hollywood Undead, where these six are in fact as Mr. 3 Tears eloquently puts it, "Gods".
"We Are" glides forward with an industrial guitar and bass bitchslap that's both anthemic and worthy of ass-shaking. Meanwhile, Danny's hook is up there with anything Linkin Park churned out back in the Hybrid Theory days. Still, this Hollywood Undead, and they're decidedly unlike any other unit out there.
Every element comes together in "We Are" for one of the group's most powerful, passionate, and potent singles yet. "To all you overdosed and you miles of coke fiends", 3 Tears continues, "I'm married to the devil in the city of angels". Each MC has gotten more visual and vicious. J-Dog rages vibrantly, "The pain is your best friend, you love it no question". It's a line that speaks directly to the disengendered youth hellbent on self-destruction without ever talking down. Instead, it could very well yield catharsis—like Korn did for an entire generation and still do.
This Hollywood Undead's time though. Are you ready?
