The new single from How to destroy angels_ "Keep it together" [iTunes link] is on par with Trent Reznor's best work in Nine Inch Nails, while soaring to a new level of its own.
Now, the man has continually broken ground and changed the game since Pretty Hate Machine and all the way to his mind-blowing score for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Raising the bar is par for the course with him, but collectively with Mariqueen Maandig, Atticus Ross, and Rob Sheridan, he does it again. The first taste of the group's forthcoming An omen_ EP, out November 13, proves infinitely and invasively infectious.
The hums and hues of industrial and stark production paint a transfixing soundscape that's easy to fall into. It's unlike anything out there with the percussive echo and skittering cyber glitches. Maandig's voice echoes divinely with pristine power as she croons, "I’ve been waiting for a sign to appear".
Then, Reznor's unmistakable voice fills in the harmony, volleying back and forth with Maandig. In a modern age where everyone plays it safe and treads the same ground, How to destroy angels_ burn convention and yield something that's simultaneously melodic, yet still dangerous, fiery, and fresh. They're destroying expectations and erecting a new template to follow once again. That's the only thing familiar here…
