Cougar Town May Change Its Name

Talk about changing horses in mid-stream. Cougar Town co-creator Bill Lawrence wants to change the title of the popular ABC comedy, which stars Courteney Cox, for its next season since the series has evolved into an ensemble show rather than one that is focused on Cox and her character, Jules Cobb, so reports People.
"You would be hard-pressed to watch the last three episodes of the show and asked anyone for titles I doubt anyone would say Cougar Town," said the executive to HitFix. In a stronger point, he says that the title change would attract people who normally wouldn't watch a show with the existing title, since it's so heavily connoted, limited and misleading. "Partly as a result of common sense and partly from [the studio's] research, they find too many instances of testing of people saying they would never watch a show called Cougar Town — 'I don't want to see some show about a 40-year-old woman nailing younger guys,' " said Lawrence. "And then they screen an episode, and people go, 'Oh, I would watch this show.'" So it appears that the title does more harm than good, even though "cougar" is quite the buzz word and catch phrase. Come on, Bill! Everyone loves a coug!
Do you think a title change is in order and what should they call it? Or should they stick with the title given the fact that the show already had legs and traction? Why confuse people? And shouldn't they have done some market testing research in advance of the initial episode? I think they should do a contest for fans to rename the show. And at that very moment, Cougar Town will jump the shark.
