Virginia is for lovers, and Valentine’s Day is for playlists- here is your Valentine’s Mix from ARTISTdirect!
Another Valentine's Day is here! We at ARTISTdirect.com usually spend this holiday alone in a dark room- just our broken dreams, tears, and a tub of Chunky Monkey ice cream to keep us company. Come to think of it, we actually do that most Wednesdays. Either way, V-Day seems like an occasion worthy of a romantic playlist- so let's go for a ride, star-crossed lovers!
There is no master crooner like the Reverend Al Green himself. Even President Obama made a recent splash on YouTube singing this song! When a politician sings it, you know it's romantic. It's the ultimate anthem for Valentine's Day, and was actually my wedding song. It was between this and Snow's "Informer"- my wife preferred Al Green for some reason.
The indelibly talented, creative, and eccentric Andre 3000 channels Prince on this jam from the critically and commercially acclaimed double-Outkast album, Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below. It's a great track and the name makes perfect sense for a Valentine’s Day playlist.
This is the brand new single from our modern master of soul, John Legend. Sensual, seductive, and sentient- this track brings the heat while also forcing you to think of a third adjective that starts with "s" to describe it to get some alliteration. What? Ignore that part… All you need to know is that it’s a good one for a romantic holiday.
NOFX’s leading man Fat Mike writes a love letter to his girl, as well as to his beloved punk rock. Mike relates that he knew he wanted to marry his wife once he saw her collection of classic punk records. "I knew you were the one/ when I saw Machine Gun Etiquette/ I knew you were the one/ When I saw the P.E.A.C.E./ War comp!" Nothing spells romance like classic punk records from The Damned, right? It makes me want to saw "Oy!- Love You!" And that, ladies and gentlemen, is your requisite bad punk-Valentine's Day pun for today.
Don't think a band called Five Finger Death Punch belongs in your Valentine's Day playlist? Well, you're probably right! But regardless, we just couldn't resist. A dark, powerful and emotional ballad like "Remember Everything” is simply too good to ignore. 5FDP actually hosts their own nationally syndicated radio show called "Love Songs For Tough Guys" each year around Valentine’s Day, which features hard rock and metal songs for guys on this sappy holiday. Be sure to check it out on your local rock radio station this year.
Who knew one of your favorite indie rock bands had a slow jam in them? This stems from Rilo's pretty underrated 2007 album, Under the Blacklight- which, consequently, is where most single people spend their Valentine's Day! Speaking of which, I hear there is a Valentine’s Day Singles Special at Crazy Tito's Taco Club, if you’re so inclined.
Here, Flyleaf proclaim a soaring love letter from their debut album. You can expect a brand new album from this incredible band later this year, as they are currently in the studio with producer Howard Benson.
A love song from Radiohead? And it's not about an airbag saving someone's life? We all know and love this dreamy number from the band's incredible and experimental album, In Rainbows. "I don't want to be your friend/ I just want to be your lover," Thom Yorke croons. Write that down on a Valentine and watch the magic unfold!
This is a man at the end of his rope, excuse the Foo Fighters song title pun. Dave Grohl, the master songwriter he is, lays his life and love on the line to create one of the most spirited rock hits of the decade. Here's to "The hope that starts the broken hearts." Wow, I never realized how sad that lyric is when you say it on its own until now.
For those single people out there on Valentine’s Day, there's always an alternative to love- maybe playing video games, or quiet crying. Whatever it may be- try to enjoy yourself. Remember that St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner!
There you have it, my people. Romantic enough for you? I wanted to work a Sisqo song in there somewhere but just ran out of space, I guess... Oh well- at any rate, Happy Valentine's Day to all, and to all a good night!
