ICYMI: Miley Cyrus Reigns Over SNL; Announces Shared Tour With The Flaming Lips
Tue, 06 Oct 2015 12:07:24
Garbed in some kind of Marie-Antoinette-meets-the-Little-Mermaid regalia, Miley Cyrus, as both host and musical guest, took to the Saturday Night Live stage over the weekend and performed two cuts from her latest album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. For "Karen, Don’t Be Sad," a somber number that highlights her soaring vocals, she was backed by The Flaming Lips—among others, her collaborators on the album—in standard furry wear, Wayne Coyne and co. looking more like willing stage props than anything else.
Later on, Cyrus was moved to tears during a song about her beloved, departed pets, "The Twinkle Song," which she performed solo on piano. A prominent vegetarian and animal lover, it was a genuine display of emotion—a moment of unveiled authenticity in a career overwrought with affectation, re: the tongue—and served to underscore her strong songwriting on the track.
The day after, it was officially announced that Cyrus and the Flaming Lips, as her backing band Her Dead Petz, will embark on a limited-city tour starting November 19 in Chicago. Tickets for the tour (dates and cities below) go on sale this Wednesday, October 7, at 4 p.m. local time via livenation.com.
