Last night, a slew of stars played at the Philip Glass-curated Tibet House Benefit at Carnegie Hall in New York, New York. We caught up with Philip last week to discuss 26 years of Tibet House concerts. Iggy Pop, Sharon Jones, FKA Twigs, Philip Glass, Basia Bulat and others performed. During the show, Iggy Pop covered David Bowie's "The Jean Genie" and later played one of the songs Bowie penned specifically for him, "Tonight," with Sharon Jones.
The annual Tibet House Benefit Concert, now in its 26th year, is where vice president and curator Philip Glass pulls out all the stops. The curator told ARTISTdirect about his vision of the role of the Tibet House, "We wanted to start a center that would be a kind of a cultural museum really, and a place where people could go and learn. When we began that, and when we began that some time ago , there were very few people who even knew where Tibet was."
He continued, "It was in 1959 when the Chinese took over the country and 200,000 went to live in Northern India and some Americans and other people found out about it and we got interested. At first there were just a few Tibetans that came to the states. And now there's a whole generation of people who are born here that are Tibetan and study Tibetan and study their culture and Tibet House is one of the places that has become important to preserving that."
This is the fourth time Iggy Pop has played at the Tibet House Benefit Concert. He is currently preparing to release his seventeenth studio album, Post Pop Depression.
