In Honor of Immortals, out this 11/11/11, we’ve devised the perfect tracks to help you fight for everlasting life.
This Friday marks quite the event. In addition to being 11/11/11- the biggest event until next year’s 12/12/12- November 11th marks the release of one of the most action-packed films of the fall. Immortals is a heroic and mesmerizing tale of turmoil in Ancient Greece- and believe it or not, it has nothing to do with the collapse of the European economy! Theseus has to lead a war against King Hyperion, and epic shirtless fighting follows. To commemorate, we’ve armed you with our very own Top Ten Immortal Songs. Without further ado, here they are!
"Live Forever" - Oasis
“You and I are gonna live forever,” Liam Gallagher croons in falsetto on this iconic nineties track. This track embodies a purely nineties take of immortality- injecting it with an existentialist and “whatever” attitude. May the gods wear flannel and grow their goatees in pride!
"The Pride" - Five Finger Death Punch
“The Pride” is quite possibly the quintessential track from Five Finger Death Punch’s brand new album, American Capitalist. The furiously paced verses combine Americana with Dadaism- as frontman Ivan Moody cleverly rhymes “White House” with “Mickey Mouse,” among many other action-packed nouns. During the bridge, Moody relates, “Since the dawn of time, only the strong have survived/ I will not be forgotten- welcome to The Pride.” If you haven’t heard it yet, you’re missing out- and you’re definitely in the minority as this album recently debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts.
"Forever Young" - Alphaville
If Oasis delivered a “nineties” take on immortality, Alphaville certainly know how to deliver an “eighties” take. This dreamy, wistful new wave classic laments wanting to be, well… forever young. Man, they really know how to make you depressed!
"Get Up!" - Korn
The first single off Korn’s upcoming album, The Path of Totality, features Skrillex and infuses a furious dubstep element into Korn’s beautiful, heavy dystopia. In the middle of this world’s turmoil, Jonathan Davis screams at us to get up and solve our problems. The song has been a huge hit, and the album hits everywhere December 6th, so be ready.
"You and Whose Army?" - Radiohead
This easily takes the title of sleepiest song on our Immortals playlist. Don’t let the dreamy music fool you, though- Thom Yorke is declaring war. “Holy Roman Empire… Come on if you think you can take us all on.” By the end, the track cascades into a crescendo of pianos and cymbals, affirming that “We ride tonight.”
"Fully Alive" - Flyleaf
With crunchy, dueling guitars, Flyleaf kick off their mid tempo hit from their eponymous debut album. “Fully alive/ more than most/ ready to smile/ and love live,” singer Lacey Sturm triumphantly declares. It’s a soaring affirmation of the human spirit. Somebody get me my jogging shoes!
"You Only Live Once" - The Strokes
This staccato rocker opens The Strokes’ third album, First Impressions of Earth. I remember my first impressions of earth- it looked very much like a hospital.
"Forever" - Chris Brown
I could have sworn this song was by Cher? Sure sounds like it! Many of us know this song from the famous wedding party video on YouTube, where the entire group of bridesmaids and groomsmen enter the church while dancing to this hit song. I tried something similar with my wedding, choosing “Human Behaviour” by Björk as our processional. Let’s just say it didn’t go over as well.
"Death Before Dishonor" - Five Finger Death Punch
This is a deep cut from 5FDP’s first album, The Way of the Fist. It definitely embodies the all-out and all-in attitude needed to succeed in battle. I’m sure Theseus would have it on his iPod if he could.
"Date With Destiny" - Pennywise
A classic microcosm of Southern California punk, Pennywise make sure to “carpe” the “diem” as it were on this track from Full Circle. “Did you live like a dream come true or did you just survive?” singer Jim Lindberg implores. While we can’t really claim immortality, we need to make the most out of our lives on a daily basis. Personally, I live each day like it will be my last- that’s why I’m broke and have a criminal record in seven states. Just kidding, Mom!
By Zeus’ beard, we’ve done it! Now, you are ready to watch Immortals in all its splendor. To help achieve immortality, be sure to eat your vegetables- and don’t forget to moisturize! Enjoy Immortals this weekend, and we’ll see you at all the 11/11/11 office parties.
