Country and pop mavericks on their new 2 Steps Back EP, eighties flicks, and more.
Oklahoma's own 2SB make country rock and pop with their new 2 Steps Back EP [2SB Music]. Brothers Kyle, Jake, and Wes Lowrey and Dave Kscelny churn out a unique amalgam of genres that carries a decidedly fresh fire to the forefront. There's a slick southern swagger punctuated by a modern radio-ready bounce and some old school rock fire. So, we spoke to Jake in this exclusive interview about the EP, eighties movies, and so much more.
What was your approach to the 2 Steps Back EP?
We have been sitting on this for a long time and are really excited to finally get it out—and have something to give to our fans. We've been a band since 2008 and put out an album in 2009. We set out to record an album, but it took us a long time to figure out what our sound was and what we were going for. We listen to a lot of John Mayer and George Strait, and I'm glad we pushed ourselves to put out an outstanding product. We are really behind it and proud.
Where do you find that cross-section between pop and country?
I think that a real good example would be "Country Girl Swag," and it came to me one day while we were just about to record the demos. We had been looking for other writers actually, but it suddenly came to me. It is a great midway point between what is pop and the country side. As writers, it shows that we can pull it off, bringing that swag into country.
Where did "Revolve" come from?
Actually, Kyle was the sole writer on that song. It is indicative of the country scene in Oklahoma and Texas. You can see some of the influences in there and see how much it has grown over time. I find that fans really relate to that song, and it has a great pop sensibility to it. The track is really familiar to us but shows our growth.
