In the 21st century music business, you've got to be something of a chameleon. Survival requires constant evolution. Adam Alpert stands out as emblematic of that. His company Disruptor Records/Disruptor Management and Selector Songs literally does it—and does it very well.
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, Adam Alpert talks Disruptor Records/Disruptor Management and Selector Songs and so much more.
What’s your vision for Disruptor Records/Disruptor Management and Selector Songs?
It's the new modern music company. The three-pronged company's main focus is the artist’s career as a whole, that it is long and successful so I wanted to set up a company that was a one stop shop for management, label, and publishing naturally including A&R, marketing, promotion, and PR. Disruptor will oversee all of these aspects using modern methods that are relevant to the ways we consume music and the artists themselves today and the ways we will tomorrow using genuine, non-commercialized promotion, and direct artist-fan communication and relationships to build artist careers.
How important is malleability in this business? You definitely wear a lot of different hats. Is that crucial to survival and success?
Malleability is crucial if history has proven anything. Technology and the way we consume is always changing and we need to adapt and pivot constantly. I do wear a lot of hats, and that's by choice yet they are all with the same goals in mind so in essence it's really just one hat with a lot under it.
In some ways, does management enable you to do everything?
Management does enable you to be involved in everything and I come from a management background. However, now with a label and publishing venture I can actually ensure everyone is working on the same strategy.
What attracts you to an artist and makes you want to work with him or her?
Selfishly, the first thing is that I personally love their music. After that I look for a intense passion and similarly an intense work ethic. It's also super important that artist loves to perform and will do anything for their fans.
What’s been your coolest memory this year from bringing all this to life?
Oh wow, there have been a lot of good ones with The Chainsmokers. Going to #1 on Billboard dance, receiving my RIAA Platinum record plaque, playing mainstage at Ultra Music Festival, drinking tea and listening to music with Rick Rubin at his house....
What have you been listening to?
In the process of signing three new acts, and I listen to them all day long. It's addicting! I can't wait for the world to hear this music. Obviously, listen to The Chainsmokers constantly. They have about 20 unreleased tracks virtually done. Outside of my artists, I love Above & Beyond, Drake, Galantis, Foo Fighters, and Dave Matthews Band to name a few.
What’s next for you?
Going to announce our new signings before the end of the year as well as the plans for their new releases as well as a lot of music and a lot of shows.
How cool is all of this?
