Anthony Lewis makes sweet, sweet pop music on his new single "Candy Rain". In fact, it sounds just as wonderful as its title, formally introducing the world to this budding and bright star. However, this merely kicks off what’s bound to be a massive career for Lewis.
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, Anthony Lewis talks “Candy Rain”, his influences, and so much more.
What's the story behind "Candy Rain"?
When I was in the studio, Garnett March brought the record to me. He played it and asked, "How do you like this?" I grew up on an old school trip so I was like, "This is crazy!" We decided to make it a first single so they'd ask, "Didn't I hear that back in the day?" I wanted to show people that old school vibe.
What's it about lyrically?
It means everything is between me and the female I'm talking to. She's the only girl I'm going to be with. She's the only girl I mess with. It's that type of thing. It's a certain type of love connection. It's talking about young life and young love.
Does this pave the way for other music for you?
It definitely opens up everything. I'm into making great music for my fans and y'all. If you can vibe with it, that's what matters. I'm talking about real things and real life experiences. People can identify with that.
What artists shaped you?
I'd say Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, and all the greatest. Those are the ones for sure! I always listened to music. I grew up mostly on Michael Jackson and Chris Brown. The first song I sang was "Smooth Criminal" by Michael. The way he was moving inspired me so much. How finessed he was and smooth was amazing. Then Chris Brown was doing what Michael Jackson was. That inspired me to do what I'm doing now and pursue a career.
How do songs come together for you?
We just start with the beat first. The beats come with melodies, and we put the pen to it. I'm writing every day. Even when I'm not in the studio, I'm at home writing music. I want to make sure when I write I'm speaking the truth.
What else are you into outside of music?
I'm into sports like basketball and football. I like to kick it with my friends. Music isn't a different life. It's the same. I'm trying to take advantage of the opportunities I have and really live life. As a kid, I get to do what I do.
How's the album coming along?
We're working on it. We want people to get familiar with "Candy Rain" first.
How did the music video come about?
We wanted to do something old school, but we didn't want to change it too much. We wanted to keep it real, simple, and smooth. People like cleanness. I didn't want to stray too far away from that. From there, it was magic. The video turned out amazing.
