Bloom Twins instantly hypnotize. As soon as you hear the divinely, dynamic yet dark sisterly harmonies of Anna and Sonia Kuprienko, you'll be hypnotized. Equally somber and soaring, it's immediately infectious and utterly unforgettable music from two of the world's most promising young voices. Expect to hear a lot more from them and about them over the next year…
In this exclusive interview with ARTISTdirect.com editor in chief Rick Florino, Anna and Sonia talk music, moving from Ukraine to London, fashion, and so much more.
What does "Fahrenheit" mean to you?
Sonia: We really love the song. It's about love, and it's fresh. When we moved to London, we first heard the song. We decided to do "Fahrenheit". We loved the melody and lyrics, but we wanted to do it our own style. It went well so we decided to do a video.
Anna: It's a dreamy song.
Why did you move to London?
Anna: I really like it. There are a lot of great opportunities. You can record songs and the quality is much better than in Ukraine. We like Ukraine, but you can't record a lot of nice songs there. London is the second capital of the music world. New York is first.
Sonia: We decided to come here, and now I feel like it's our home.
Anna: I remember our first time in London. It was so bad [Laughs]. When we first arrived here, we couldn't say any words in English. After three months, it was so easy. People are so friendly here. I like everything here.
Sonia: It's very different.
How did you both discover music?
Anna: We started to sing before we could speak. It was always about music. For our whole lives, we've been singing. We never thought about it much.
Sonia: It's just our life.
What artists shaped you?
Sonia: I really like Portishead and Massive Attack. I love Bristol's music. It's amazing. I love Radiohead as well.
Anna: Lana Del Rey is really good. I also like The Beatles. They're old school. I grew up on them. Our parents used to be super big fans.
How far along on the EP are you?
Anna: We're preparing for it. We've got a lot of songs already. It's all about love [Laughs].
Sonia: It's our experiences.
Anna: The first song "He Is Not Me" is about us. Everyone thinks that one is about love, but it's really about the two of us. We're really different, and it's about the friction between us. People always compare us, but we're completely different inside. When we write songs though, we're working together.
Sonia: We'll suggest different things, but we make something both of us will like.
What are you into outside of music?
Anna: We watch a lot of movies. I love A Beautiful Mind.
Sonia: It's amazing. What books do you like?
Anna: I read a book about Amy Winehouse. It was so interesting.
Sonia: We love books and movies. What about fashion?
Anna: I love Garth Pugh because he's got really dark stuff with weird shapes. It's really cool. It'd be super cool to use for our performances. I like dark things. They're so cool and unusual. I'm the biggest fan of his.
