Masked German "Raop" wizard discusses new album 'Melody' and the cross-section of Space Jam and The Empire Strikes Back!

Cro is about to put German hip-hop and pop on the map. Garnering millions upon millions of YouTube views, he's built a massive following back home, and he possesses a vision that could galvanize both genres worldwide. Rocking a mask, the man can spit, but he can also carry a tune. Moreover, his music has a classical resonance that's stunning. He recently dropped his single "Dream" and will be releasing the full-length Melody [Columbia] stateside very soon. So, we decided to chat with him about everything from his vision to melody to finding inspiration in drawing and designing and the lost cross-section between Space Jam and The Empire Strikes Back.

Did you approach Melody with one overarching vision or vibe in mind?

Hmmm, not really. I like to create music how I feel it, but I knew I wanted to continue what I started with my debut album Raop—which is to combine Rap and Pop. I just like to make music that I can enjoy and wish that anybody else likes it too.

What's the story behind "Dream?" How did the song come together and what did it mean to you?

I always wanted to do that song about the woman of my dreams. I guess everybody knows this. You just think what would be the perfect match for you and hope she or he really exists. Then, I had the instrumental, and I very quickly wrote the lyrics. It just happened. It's one of those songs that just came to me.

What else influences you outside of music? Do you watch a lot of movies or read a lot of books?

I draw a lot, and I also design clothes. I have constant creative output. If I don't do music, I paint or draw. So art and fashion I'd say are where I get my inspiration from, besides everyday life of course.

What artists shaped you the most? What are the most important/inspirational albums in your collection?

That would be Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, and Kanye West. For the albums that inspired me, I have to name my father's whole record collection!
