UK songstress on single "I'll Go," and favorite authors.
Edei is the latest mind-blowing musical export from the UK. The soul siren has got a dynamic voice that instantly enchants. She can get smoky and bluesy and then carry a heavenly hook. That's exactly what happens on her debut single "I'll Go." It's the perfect introduction to her sound and what's to come on her forthcoming EP for RH Music. She's about to explode over here, so we decided to talk to Edei about her creative process, her favorite authors and poets, and so much more.
What's the story behind "I'll Go"?
My family is very close, and I wrote "I'll Go" for my little sister. She travels the world and is quite amazing. She's my best friend, and I wanted to write something for her.
Had you ever written a song for her before?
I actually hadn't. It was something that I wanted to do though. I wanted to do it in a way that was fun and cool. We came up with the music for it. I had the lyrics, and I wanted to turn it into a song.
Was the video a concept of yours?
Yeah, that was a good friend of mine who is an unbelievable director. He had always wanted to do videos for me. We had come up with the concept which was a cool black-and-white video. He got all his friends in the industry together and put this video in motion. It can relate to all of these different scenarios and people—not just my sister and I. It was very fun to shoot.
Does "I'll Go" hint at where the music will go next?
It's definitely the way I've been wanting to go for a while. It has got that bass-driven and drum-driven element. I love this, and we're going to make it more dirty sonically and more intense. We want to bring the drum-bass thing even more into it versus the poppy stuff.
So, you're getting grittier and more organic with the instrumentation?
Yeah, it's a bit more fun. We have all of these songs, we'll probably go back in and remix them.
Is it important for you to paint pictures with the songs?
I always write from experiences I have or things that friends have gone through. I cannot just write a song to write a song.
