Interview: Legion Star Tyrese Gibson
Mon, 18 Jan 2010 08:27:43
From Four Brothers to Transformers, Tyrese Gibson has gotten pretty good with a gun over the years.
However, in Legion, he got to put those firing skills to much use. He laughs, "I think I did more shooting in this movie than I did in Transformers believe it or not."
Legion's crossfire culminates in a supernatural action horror romp that's the perfect way to kick-off 2010—with a bang, literally. In the film, Tyrese's character pulls over to a roadside dinner and ends up in a battle for humanity, protecting the mother of the messiah. Legion has got its fair share of action, but it also poses many interesting questions…
Tyrese sat down with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino to discuss popping off rounds in Legion, his new music book and comic venture and so much more in this exclusive interview.
Did you get to have some fun in Legion with all of those action sequences?
Oh yeah! It's a shoot-em-up, bang-bang, what the heaven?, and what the hell is going on? flick [Laughs]. It's pretty crazy, man! We had the earplugs in during this movie, for sure. There was a lot of shooting!
It's like reliving every childhood army fantasy from the backyard.
We were in the middle of nowhere. We had no limits to what we could and couldn't do. We just went to town. It was fun times.
Are you horror movie fan in general?
The last horror movie I saw was Paranormal Activity, and I really liked it.
Do you listen to music to get into character ever?
What's happening with your Mayhem comic book?
I just released a new single called "You Put Up With Me." It got released with my new digital comic book, Mayhem. I made history with iTunes and released the first-ever digital comic book with iTunes LP. I've released three of them already digitally. It includes voiceover. We scored it, and it's motion-graphics comics. It's on the main page of iTunes in 38 countries. Just type in "Tyrese" and "Mayhem" and have a ball! With each comic book, I had to release a single. The first one is called "Mayhem – Take Me Away." The second one is called "Make It Last." It features Jewel and was produced by Babyface. The third and latest song is called "You Put Up with Me." The downloads have been crazy. I've been getting some great reports so far. It's pretty intense, man. All of the parts for Mayhem, I did the voiceover. It's like nothing you've ever seen. It's an iTunes digital LP. It's very intense! I did it with the folks over at Apple so it's dead serious. We did a tour for Transformers, and I had my handheld camera in all eight different countries and we shot a music video.
You must feel great to have so many creative outlets.
You know what? Listen, I get really bored easily, so I just try and keep it moving man. I'm not one of those dudes that likes to do the same thing, get repetitive and get boring. I like to switch it up. I'm really happy about this.
