Interview: Josh Brolin of "Jonah Hex" —"Jonah Hex would listen to a lighter metal…Ratt or maybe Black Sabbath…"

Jonah Hex doesn't need an iPad or an iPod. He's got a horse outfitted with two gattling guns that run on pure unadulterated vengeance. Steve Jobs still hasn't been able to make an APP for that!
That's the beauty of Josh Brolin's portrayal of the classic DC hero in Warner Bros' big screen adaptation of the graphic novel. He's an undeniable badass in the most classic "Clint Eastwood" sense of the word, which makes the movie the perfect bullet-riddled revenge romp through the old West. Jonah's going to avenge his family, so he's after John Malkovich's nefarious Quentin Turnbull with the aid of some dead amigos and a smoking "Lilah," played by Megan Fox.
However, while discussing the character, Brolin had some interesting theories about who Hex would listen to. He laughs, "Ratt…I think hair band metal. It's a lighter metal. It's not speed metal. It's not black metal. Maybe Black Sabbath…"
Well, either Ozzy or Dio at the helm of Sabbath would be perfect for Hex's iPod. There's nothing like mowing down outlaws to a little "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" or "Neon Nights."
Jonah Hex star Josh Brolin sat down with ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolor author Rick Florino for an exclusive interview about what would be on Jonah Hex's playlist, the psychedelic aspects of the film and his own personal favorite bands…
Check out the interview here and below and don't miss Jonah Hex Friday June 18th!
There's a psychedelic vibe to the movie that really makes it stand out. Did you get that?
No, but I just got it now [Laughs]. At one point during Comic-Con, I said "A phantasmagoria of insanity," which lends to that idea. It is psychedelic because anything goes. As we know, people like you who are into Korn who have taken many psychedelics, know there are random possibilities that are within that. You see!
Do you ever listen to music to get into character?
Who's usually on your playlist?
I like a lot of different music. My son knows a lot of eclectic and unknown bands, but for me, I think early on just because I'm more of an auditory guy, I love listening to different types of music to figure out what tonally I want to go with a character and all of that, or a specific scene. With W., I did it on a massive school. I had a song by Macy Gray. I don't know why; I didn't even particularly like the song [Laughs], but it made me cry every time I heard it. So before I did True Grit, I'd listen to that on stage, and for some reason, it would open me wide-open and it would work for the play.
Who would be on Jonah Hex's playlist?
I was listening to a hair band this morning. Maybe Jonah Hex would listen to Ratt or some awful hair band [Laughs].
I think he's more of a Guns N' Roses guy.
Well, that's still a hair band, so it's in the genre of what we're talking about for sure.
So you'd say Ratt, Guns N' Roses…
No, I wouldn't really say that but it's more fun to say that with you, so I think that's what we'll go with [Laughs]. Oh man, Ronnie James Dio who just passed away recently! He was fantastic.
Jonah would definitely listen to Dio…
For sure, I think he'd listen to more metal than country.
I think so too, but I think hair band metal. I think it's a lighter metal. I don't think it's speed metal. It's not black metal. Maybe Black Sabbath, if we were to go with really early Black Sabbath…
Black Sabbath, I could see, but I don't think he's going to listen to butt rock like Poison.
Or the Butthole Surfers! He wouldn't listen to the Butthole Surfers for sure.
Nothing with "Butt" in it.
Nothing with "Butt" in it [Laughs].
He's such a badass and you play him so well.
Thank you, man. I feel like you and I are on a whole personal level [Laughs].
Was that vengeance part of his charm for you?
Part of his charm is just this alcoholic curmudgeon skeptical, or cynical guy who's able to play with the humor he's able to play with. He's got a great dry sense of humor. You can go anywhere with the character as an actor and that was fun for me.
