New pop starlet on single "Boom," working with 8ky6lu of LMFAO, touring with Fifth Harmony, and more.
Mahogany LOX is ready to make you say (and sing) "Boom" with her. Her debut single, out now, features production by her older brother 8ky 6lu of LMFAO, and it's a bubbling and bouncy introduction to her unshakable pop sound. At the center of the track, her dynamic voice takes hold, and it blasts off, taking her to impressive heights with it! She recently toured with Fifth Harmony, Jasmine V, and Jacob Whitesides and has racked up crazy YouTube numbers. However, her forthcoming debut will continue to pave her way to the top. In this exclusive interview, Mahogany chats us up about "Boom," collaborating with 8ky6lu, touring with Fifth Harmony, why she can't bring her pets on the road, and more.
What's the story behind "Boom"?
When I was younger, I would write songs in my song list. I would not share anything with anyone else. I wrote, "Everything happens for a reason, and the reason is you." I wrote that down, and then left it alone for a few years. Fast-forward to a couple of years later, I was in the studio with my brother. We were discussing song titles and what I had written, etc. He asked me if I had any ideas for songs. I went through my songbook and asked him if he liked this. He said, "Yes, I really do." I never shared my lyrics with anyone before, and he loved it. Then, "Boom" happened. For me, I have never been in love before so I got to kind of pretend for a minute that I was. To me, this is how love would be.
Did the lyrics instantly fit with the music? Did it take a little bit of time for it to gel together?
Originally, we had that line, and we made a beat that felt hip-hop. We made some small changes, and it all came together.
Was this how you always envisioned launching your first single?
I have always wanted to sing and act. So finally, I was able to put my original track out, and it was a dream come true.
Is this an indication of how your sound will unfold?
I think it will be in the same realm.
