The guitarist shared all the secrets about the alt pop band's latest album.
L.A.-based alt pop rock band R5, featuring a trio of siblings and more, have issued their latest opus, Sometime Last Night. It's loaded to the gills with super fun pop anthems.
We spoke to guitarist Rocky Lynch, who shared some of the secrets that went into the making of an album whose songs are more addictive than crack rock. He revealed that the band really went back into the garage to do their thing, making them a literal garage band at this point. He also revealed the band's obsession with ice hockey and how writing sessions can be like blind dates.
So while you might not see or hear R5 and think "Garage Band," the album adopted that ethos. Let's find out how.
Pick one song on Sometime Last Night and go deep!
The last song we wrote. We had one day left to write and record. The best song is often the last one thrown in and the one that you barely had time to finish. We will throw it on. The label was like, 'You are running out of time. Turn the song in tomorrow or it will be a B-side.' We busted it out quick. It turned out great. It's the song called 'Feel Good.'
Was it the pressure that made it turn out so well?
That lightly affected it. We were recording and producing four songs prior to that. It took us a month in the studio. We hung out. There was no immediate deadline. It took us a month. Then, one day, it was like, 'This has to be turned in tomorrow.' We finished it one day, no problem.
Wow. That is impressive! Do you have any non-music hobbies, talents, or skills?
We all play ice hockey! We grew up playing hockey before we started playing instruments. It's our side hobby. It is a perfect break from music. You go for an hour and skate and then go into the studio. We surf sometimes. We are better hockey players than surfers.
