19-year-old singer and songwriter ready to reinvent alternative with new single "Don't Go."
REECE stands poised to change the game. The 19-year-old Virginian just graduated high school, and he recently unveiled his new single "Don't Go." It's already began buzzing online, especially at Soundcloud. The early fervor around his music is a result of its infectious innovation. He merges alternative, R&B, indie, and pop into something that's immediately enchanting. At the center, his voice takes hold and blasts off to incredible heights. REECE is on his way to very big things. We spoke to him in this exclusive interview about "Don't Go" and so much more.
What's the story behind "Don't Go"?
Well, I had the melody for "Don't Go" in my head for the longest time. I couldn't find a beat to go along with it. I finally did. For me, "Don't Go" is about a relationship. It doesn't really matter what type of relationship. It could be a romantic one, it could be a friendship, or it could be family relationship, either way, it's falling apart. You're trying to keep it together. It's going to fall apart, but you don't have any control over it.
How do you go about choosing beats?
When I get music, I try and listen for a beat that I really click with. A lot of stuff that I like usually has really heavy drums. I like beats with a hip-hop essence. I enjoy different genres as well when it comes to instrumentals.
Do multiple genres tend to speak to you?
Yeah, I love all music. I was very fortunate to grow up in a house where every different genre of music was played. I think that I really latched onto that. I try and pick my favorite things from different genres and put them together.
What artists shaped you?
Well, I think my biggest inspiration ever is Imogen Heap, and I have been listening to her since I was nine-years-old. I know that's weird, but I've been listening to her religiously. I love Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Adele, and Yuna. I like The Weeknd a lot too. I like really sad moody stuff.
